Reforesting our finca: Bringing Biodiversity Back

Exciting times at Finca Guarumo as we continue our mission to restore biodiversity! In addition to our thriving edible garden, we’re planting native jungle trees — some endemic, endangered, and extremely rare. Every avocado we eat, gets its seed in the ground, along with mangoes, and local fruit trees like jackfruit, manzana de agua, mamón chino, zapote, mangosteen, nance, caimito, jocote, jobo, and ojoche, to name just a few. These trees don’t just grow fast and feed us — they restore our soil, give food to local animals, and help rebuild the ecosystem.
We’re fortunate to live in the Osa Peninsula, often hailed as one of the most biologically intense places on Earth. The region’s tropical diversity is astonishing, thanks to the fact that the Ice Age never struck here. Ancient species that vanished elsewhere still thrive in this unique corner of the world. One of our proudest moments has been planting not one, but two ceiba trees, those giants of the rainforest with roots in ancient times!
It’s more than just trees though; we’re on a mission to restore what was lost due to cattle grazing and illegal logging. Biodiversity matters. It creates resilience in ecosystems—supporting a wide variety of life, from insects and birds to larger animals and even us humans! The more diverse the forest, the more it can thrive and adapt. By restoring the trees and plants that once flourished here, we’re not just healing the land; we’re creating a balanced, vibrant environment where everything from the tiniest pollinator to the largest predator can coexist.
So here at Finca Guarumo, we’re not just growing food for ourselves in the garden—we’re building a living, breathing ecosystem for future generations. Stay tuned as we continue this exciting journey of reforestation and regeneration!
