Welcome to Finca Guarumo, a slice of paradise in the heart of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. We are Katja and Peter Hollaar, a Dutch couple who took a leap of faith in 2022, leaving behind our lives in the Netherlands to pursue a dream of sustainable living in one of the world's most biodiverse regions.

Our journey began in August 2023 when we acquired this beautiful piece of land, driven by a vision to create a harmonious balance between nature and human habitation. Finca Guarumo isn't just an eco-retreat; it's our home, our passion project, and a testament to the challenges and rewards of off-grid living.

At Finca Guarumo, sustainability isn't just a buzzword; it's our way of life. We harness 100% of our electricity from solar energy. Our water comes straight from a crystal-clear spring, free from chemicals and rich in minerals. We're committed to growing at least 70% of what we eat, composting organic waste, and using rainwater for non-drinking purposes. Our ongoing reforestation efforts focus on planting fruit and native forest trees, enhancing the local ecosystem.

Living off-grid has been an eye-opening adventure, filled with challenges we never anticipated in Europe. From carrying heavy solar batteries through the jungle to battling rapidly growing vegetation that threatens to overshadow our solar panels, every day brings new lessons in resilience and ingenuity.

But the rewards are immeasurable. Imagine waking up to the sounds of the jungle, stepping onto your porch to see Carolina, our resident brocket deer, grazing nearby, or watching squirrel monkeys play in the trees as toucans and macaws perch close by. This is the everyday magic of Finca Guarumo.

Our vision extends beyond our own slice of paradise. We're deeply committed to the local community, learning from our neighbors, and giving back by promoting their services for tours and activities. In the future, we plan to open a community center, offering activities that will bring together locals and visitors.
